Most Important Questions to Ask When Buying a Home

The home buying process brings with it a number of emotions. Excitement, anxiety, and stress can alter even the most logical, thoughtful minds and thus make it difficult to gather the appropriate information prior to making an offer. Attending open houses and doing ample research online is a great way to sink your teeth into the general process, but there are certain questions that must be asked when buying a house. In doing so, you are protecting you and your family from future challenges before you sign on the dotted line.

From the previous homeowner to the home’s agent to the neighbors, asking the right questions is absolutely critical. The following are some of the most important questions to ask when buying a home:

  1. What is the property’s sale history?
  2. Are there any association fees or membership requirements?
  3. In today’s market, what is the property’s worth? What are the comparable sales (“comps”) in the neighborhood?
  4. Is the asking price negotiable?
  5. How much are the property taxes?
  6. What is the average cost of the monthly utility costs and maintenance?
  7. What condition is the house in and what type of repairs will be needed?
  8. Is the home in a good location as far as work commutes, school zones, and general noise levels?
  9. What major renovations have been made to the home?
  10. How long ago, if ever, was the roof replaced?
  11. Are there any concerns with pests, termites, or any other infestations?
  12. What documentation do you have for warranties on things like mechanical systems, appliances, garage door, etc.?

The home buying process is overwhelming and thrilling, making preparedness essential for anyone looking to purchase. It’s good to know that when it comes to buying a house that there are some things that we need to keep in mind to ask to make sure we are getting the right house. I like how you mentioned that we need to inquire about is if the asking price is negotiable in any way. This is something that we will have to remember when it comes to having the house of our dreams without spending a lot of money on it.
